Keng Teck Whay (KTW) is one of the earliest self-help organizations in Singapore founded by 36 Peranakan merchants from Malacca and Singapore at the present site. They were sworn brothers and subsequently elected a Towkay, two “Lu Zu” (Incense Bearer) and other key appointment holders to manage the organization.

Keng Teck Whay was originally gazetted as a National Monument together with Thian Hock Keng Temple and Chong Wen Ge Pavilion in year 1973 by newly set up Preservation of Monument Board (PMB).

On 5th January 2009, Singapore major Chinese newspaper Lianhe Zaobao reported the situation of Keng Teck Whay (KTW) Building. Due to lack of maintenance, the structure of the building was deemed unsafe. Since 2007, the owner of the building, Keng Teck Whay (Association) had put up a “notice” to sell the building but there was no response. However, this report attracted the attention of Rev. Master Lee Zhiwang of Taoist Mission (Singapore) .

Thereafter, the two organizations spent more than a year discussing and negotiating the transfer of rights of the building. Finally, KTW (Association) awarded the transfer of the KTW Building ownership to Taoist Mission (Singapore) on 31st March 2010. The history making news was announced at the Taoist Mission’s Taoist Day Celebration on 01 April 2010.
